PostSubject: The Castle   Fri Nov 14, 2008 6:52 pm

These are some notes I took off of wikipedia, because I am trying to construct the setting for where the story begins: the capitol.

A castle is a defensive structure differing from a fort or fortress in the fact that it houses a monarch or noble.

Defining Features:
-place of retreat, protection from enemy (porticullises, battlements, drawbridges)
-offensive structure built in hostile territories to exert strategic control
-residence of monarch or feudal vassal
-some are used as prisons (such as the Tower of London)
-social place

Other names and types of Castles
-Kremlin - Russia
-Shiro - Japan
-Alcazar - Spain
-Caer - Welsh
-Dun - Irish / Scottish Gaelic
Chateau - French
Burg - German

Round-corner towers were more effective in castle construction because 1) more efficient use of stone. 2) improved defence against battering rams. 3) improved field of fire

Defensive Features
Keep (donjon) - central feature of castle. residential. redoubt (wich means that if the outer wall falls, they can retreat to the keep). contained within the walls or attached to them
Enciente - entire fortified enclosure of castle precincts. Often surmounted by walkways and walls to defend castle. Projecting flanking towers can be added to improve defence.
Gatehouse - gate is weak point in defence. strengthened with flanking towers, turning or removable bridge, doors, heavy porticullises, and arrow slits.
Additional Features - Moats and ditches, overhanging wooden hoardings which provide additional lines of fire, permanent version of hoarding is machicolation. Crenellations and merlons offer relative cover for archers. Murder holes for archers to shoot from.

there are usually two ways a castle is set up in comparison to the village
-the village is conatained inside the castle walls. Which the walls have to reach out rather far and this style is not the most used, due to cost and time it would take to make the large and lengthy walls
-the other style is that there is a centralized caslte with heavy forifications with living space only for nobles and high ranking soldiers such as knights.
the villages are usually near the caslte incase they need protecion.
this is the way the germany widley built their's
(this is not to critsize but to add to castle research).
