Heave and Ho, the boat aglide
Across the frothing waters
With paddled oar and tattered sail
Towards the setting sun

The prow points high then faces down
to darkness far beneath us
From wave to wave, and cloud to cloud
'Cross shallow and the steep

And on the creaking saltwashed boards
the captain in command;
From skyline view to reckless crew
to map and compass near at hand.

High-standing lookout in the crows nest,
with looking-glass aloft.
What does your keen-eyed vision spy
A hundred miles off?

Some brilliant emerald of a land,
not seen before by man,
Lies naught but down this treacherous path
of roiling surf and rocky sands.

'Ahoy! Ahoy! And raise the flag!
Our journey's end draws nigh!
We'll land before tomorrow's dusk
that's wont to grace the starlit sky!'

The ocean deep now crystal-like
under the heaven's host
ripples silent like a dream
at the subtle pathway of the boat.

Heave and Ho, on through the night
Beneath the onyx sky,
The sailors row towards the dawn
Where danger waits and wonders lie.

Up on the creaky, sailing craft
the crew was thrilled at sight
of stony shoreline on the horizon
witnessed at the fall of night

Beneath the deck, revels began
the merry corsairs drank
to their good fortune, to the captain
and to safe sailing at dawn's break

After a time, the lute was drawn
and favorite tales were sung
